Grand Forks North Dakota's Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux are on the 2010 U.S. women's hockey national team. And if they survive the final two cuts, which should come in December, they will represent the U.S. in the 2010 Olympic Games.
The announcement of the 23-player national team roster was made Monday afternoon during a press conference in Blaine, Minn. That team will play a tour of about 20 games between now and the February Vancouver Games.
The twins have spent the last week in Blaine with 40 others trying to make the team, which will be coached by Wisconsin’s Mark Johnson, a gold medalist from the 1980 Miracle on Ice team.
The Lamoureuxs could be the first female athletes from UND to represent the U.S. in an Olympics.
The Lamoureuxs are coming off of big freshman seasons for the University of Minnesota. Monique had 75 points in 40 games, while Jocelyne tallied 65. They were two of the three forwards named first-team all-Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
After the season, they requested a release from Minnesota, so they could transfer to their hometown team, UND. This summer, they have been working out at UND to prepare for the Olympic tryouts.
They will have to sit out the 2009-10 season per WCHA transfer rules, but would have missed the college season anyway, as part of the Olympic squad.
